New cadets at the US Air Force Academy start the second phase of Basic Cadet Training by marching to a training range called Jacks Valley for 10 days of field exercises and military training. Older cadets - the cadre - conduct most of the training.

As the midshipmen's plebe year comes to a close, the first-year students participate in Sea Trials. The event, modeled after the Marine Corps' Crucible and Navy's Battle Stations events, runs over 14 hours and tests the plebes' physical and mental endurance.
